Chellino Crane has First Luffing Jib for Model 12000

US rental firm, Chellino Crane, based in Joliet, Illinois, has taken delivery
of the first luffing jib for the Manitowoc Model 12000 crawler crane. The
Model 12000 launched just over a year ago, with a number of units already
delivered, but Chellino’s luffing jib configuration is a North American first.
Chellino purchased its Model 12000 nine months ago, impressed with its
versatility and ability to operate in a variety of different jobsite
environments. However, it was not until the company began winning oil refinery
contracts - specifically one at a major production facility, close to Chicago
– that the need for the 52 m (170 ft) luffing jib was recognized.
The job at the facility initially used a 450 t (500 USt) capacity rival
crawler crane, configured with luffing jib. But Chellino found the Model 12000
a far better fit for the project, and also more cost effective. Previously,
the Model 12000 had comfortably performed routine refinery lifting tasks with
its maximum 21 m (70 ft) of fixed jib on top of a heavy-lift boom of 61 m (200
ft). But a job installing a relief-valve pipe onto the upper section of a coke
unit required extra lift and height – exactly the capabilities that the
12000’s luffing jib provides.
The coke unit was 76 m (250 ft) tall, while the relief-valve pipe sat
approximately 3 m (10 ft) higher. Both the unit and pipe each weighed 2.7 t (3
USt), and each was handled comfortably using the Model 12000’s luffing jib.
When combined with heavy-lift boom, the luffing jib attachment gives a maximum
tip height of 94.5 m (310 ft), although the luffing jib alone, with all
inserts, can reach 52 m (170 ft).
The company’s president, Greg Chellino, said the luffing jib has been a sound
investment. “With the luffing jib we can now increase our lifting services,
and therefore our profitability,” he said. “The Model 12000 is very dependable
and easy-to-operate with beautifully smooth hydraulics, an excellent line
pull, and it’s a quick worker. It is very easy to transport and assembling and
disassembling hasn’t given us a single problem.”
The Model 12000 has a maximum line pull of 21 t (23 US t) and a maximum line
speed of 163 m/minute (535 ft/minute). It includes a six-cylinder, 247 kW (332
hp) Mitsubishi 6D24-TLA2K engine and its hydraulic system is powered by four
variable displacement piston-type pumps and a heavy-duty pump drive.
Chellino purchased both the crane and the luffing jib through Walter Payton
Power Equipment, the local MCG dealer, based in Riverdale, Illinois. The crane
itself was purchased via MCG’s CraneCREDIT finance program, which Greg
Chellino found straightforward, easy to understand, and very competitive. A
trouble-free transaction has given Chellino confidence to investigate future
purchases.
