Manitowoc exhibits Potain Igo 30 and Igo T 85 at Intermat 2009

The Igo 30 has a total weight of less than 26 t, meaning it can travel with just one truck in most of its markets, lowering transportation costs.

Manitowoc is displaying its Potain Igo 30 and Igo T 85 self-erecting cranes at Intermat 2009. The Igo 30 is the latest standard self-erecting crane from the popular Igo range. The Igo T 85 is the second crane in the Igo T line, a range of larger self-erecting cranes with telescoping masts for variable working heights.

Vincent Milan, Manitowoc’s senior product manager for self-erecting cranes, said that Manitowoc’s engineers emphasize developing all aspects and attributes of the Igo cranes because customers benefit from this total package approach.
“The emphasis on the Igo range is to make everything about the job as easy as possible,” he said. “When designing the cranes, we focus on everything from transporting it to the site, to rigging it, maintaining it, operating it on site and then moving on to the next job. Our customers see a real operational advantage in running Igo self-erecting cranes, and the reputation of Potain means they have the added benefit of strong residual values.”

The Igo 30 is built at the Manitowoc factory in Niella Tanaro, Italy and was introduced at the end of 2008. Featuring many design elements that make the Igo range so popular with customers, the Potain Igo 30 is available in two versions: a 30 m jib version that has a tip capacity of 900 kg and a 28 m jib version that lifts 1 t at its jib end. Maximum capacity for both versions is 2.2 t, which the crane lifts out as far as 14.6 m. Height under hook is 21 m and the jib can luff to either 8 degrees or 20 degrees.

Maximum capacity for both versions is 2.2 t, which the crane lifts out as far as 14.6 m. Height under hook is 21 m and the jib can luff to either 8 degrees or 20 degrees.

The Igo 30 has a total weight of less than 26 t, meaning it can travel with just one truck in most of its markets, lowering transportation costs. It is easy to erect and move and has flexible working configurations which make it a great fit for a variety of jobs.

The crane also features the SmartCom system that incorporates special sensors and an on-board computer to improve efficiency and bring additional safety to folding and unfolding operations. For ease of set-up, the crane has side ballast, which means the counterweight does not need to be moved for folding and unfolding. This is especially useful on job sites where ‘free slew’ is not possible or where there are strict rules regarding the position of the jib during out-of-service operation.

All of the mechanisms are frequency controlled for optimum performance and productivity. Another benefit is the radio remote control, which increases driver comfort and aids productivity.

The Potain Igo T 85 was also introduced last year and features a lattice mast that offers working heights between 20 m and 35 m through either telescoping or adding sections. Maximum tip height for the crane is 51 m and the on-site footprint is 4.5 m x 4.5 m.

Maximum capacity for the Igo T 85 is 6 t which it lifts out as far as 15.4 m. In addition to offering a choice of working heights, the crane also has jib choices to suit different sites and lift requirements. With the jib fully extended to 45 m the crane can lift 1,250 kg, or with the jib unfolded to 33.8 m the crane picks 2,350 kg at jib end.

Milan said that customers gain more productivity through the flexibility and mobility of the crane.

“Even though the Igo T 85 has a strong load chart and excellent lifting capacity, it can fit into the tightest sites,” he said. “It also unfolds to its working height twice as fast as compared with other cranes. Customers can easily fold and move the crane on a job in the same day, and it has excellent transport capabilities with a top travel speed of 80 km/h and good ground clearance for on site movement.”

Smooth and fast hoist operations for the crane come courtesy of the 20 LVF 15 Optima winch which offers speeds of up to 65 m/min. It also has excellent slow speed operation of 1.6 m/min which is perfect for precision placement of structural elements such as stair cases. It shares many common parts such as ballast, mast sections and remote control with its sister crane, the Igo T 70 – offering better asset management for fleet owners.
